I know it is not 'officially' winter yet, but these last few days have made me want to cozy up in front of a fire...in a hot tub...with a hot cup of cocoa wearing a toque. (Overkill?) I have always been a big fan of warm drinks, even in the summer months, and can often be seen sipping a piping hot coffee on the beach.
I was really into hot water and lemon last winter...this year I have kicked it up a notch. My current favorite is hot lemon and turmeric which I discovered a number of years ago whilst stuck in the grips of a nasty cold. On a daily basis I drink it without the cayenne, but I'll leave that up to you. Are there health benefits you ask...sure!
Lemon, among many other things, detoxifies the body by giving the digestive system a kick in the morning. Turmeric is not only what makes mustard and curries yellow, but it’s an incredibly powerful nutritional supplement. Turmeric has chemical compounds called curcuminoids, of which curcumin is the most beneficial. Curcumin is an anti-inflammatory agent (helpful for arthritis among many other conditions) and an antioxidant. It also helps the body to absorb other antioxidants. It has been said that Turmeric helps fight depression and many other health conditions.
Even without all the benefits, I love the kick of flavour Turmeric adds to my mug.
Half a lemon
1/2 tsp of Turmeric
1/8 tsp cayenne (optional)
250ml hot water
I never let the water boil all the way, mainly because I really like my tastebuds, and don't want to burn them off, but also because boiling water tends to kill certain nutrients. Just to be safe.
I squeeze my lemon into my favorite mug, add the turmeric, (the cayenne if I am sniffly) and the water and stir. I keep my spoon, as the turmeric will separate. (Plus spoons are fun!) You can also add agave for a sweet boost if you like.
Stay warm and cozy friends!
Check out this article on webMD if you have never had turmeric before.
