The Elate Edit
To launch Elate’s Amplify Initiative, we knew that we wanted the first organization we chose to be in Canada, as the Elate head office is located in Victoria, BC, on the unceded territory of the Lekwungen and Coast Salish peoples, as well as the Songhees, Esquimalt, WSÁNEĆ and Snuneymuxw peoples whose historical relationships with the land continue to this day. The organization must bring awareness to environmental and social issues, and provide a solution to a concern that desperately needs to be addressed but is rarely talked about.
Water First was an obvious choice.
About Water First, Canada’s leading organization dedicated to Indigenous communities to resolve local water issues. It’s easy to take clean drinking water for granted.
Unfortunately, the reality is that 13.5% of First Nations communities in Canada are under a boil-water advisory; meaning that their local tap water is unsafe to drink and must be properly boiled before consuming. According to Global Citizen, around 61 Indigenous communities across Canada are under a boil-water advisory. Currently, In Canada’s east-central province of Ontario, there are 44 First Nations communities alone that are under a boil-water advisory (stated by CBC in March 2021).
Our Elate Impact team knew that this had to be addressed when deciding the first organization to launch our Amplify Initiative, that donates 100% of sales of select Elate products to a charity of the season.
Water First is Canada’s leading charitable organization dedicated to working with Indigenous communities to resolve local water challenges through education, training and meaningful collaboration. We chose this organization because we appreciated the collaboration with indigenous communities to solve the water crisis together through education, training, and meaningful collaborations to support sustainable water systems to last for generations.
“ I like this (organization) because it is a collaboration with indigenous communities to solve the water crisis. It empowers youth and young adults to make a difference in their own home towns.“ -Jacqueline Parker, Elate Impact Team Member, and Elate Educator/Pro Artist
Funds contributed to Water First are allocated amongst these 4 areas:
General: These funds are dedicated to working with Indigenous communities to resolve local water challenges through education, training and meaningful collaboration.
Drinking Water Internship: Their Drinking Water Internship is a 15-month paid internship, partnering with and training young Indigenous adults for a career in water science.
Environmental Programs: Water First partners with young Indigenous adults in learning skills that help their communities to best manage their water resources. These environmental programs facilitate restoration projects to rehabilitate waterways and baseline water quality and contaminant studies, encouraging local land stewardship.
Indigenous School Water Program: Water First runs an education program for Indigenous youth that facilitates hands-on learning through water science workshops, getting youth out on the land to complete environmental restoration projects of local significance.
“You can be part of a solution that is working – one person and one community at a time.”-Water First
