State of the beauty industry
In 2017, approximately 78 billion single-use plastic cosmetic packages were produced. Over half of those packages will end up in the landfill by next year and the rest within 3 years, never to decompose or be made into something new. This creates an unending cycle of waste, accounting for 30% of total waste. The issue of plastics in the beauty industry can be traced to the source: ease of use, marketing and cost.
At Elate, we strive to pass on our dedication - not only to our artists, partners, and customers, but to other companies in the beauty industry - and set the standard for radically ethical practices. This includes reduction targets for our waste, energy usage, and emissions over the coming years.
Where we are headed
Our current packaging is approximately 75% waste-free. Through regular source reduction, we are striving towards the last 25%. In 2019, we reduced the plastic content of our foundation packaging by 30% and completely eliminated plastic packaging in our concealer range. So far we have diverted over 10,000 Kgs of waste from the landfill. Our next project will focus on the items that are not yet refillable.
We are taking on the federal regulations to change the number of harmful chemicals banned in Canada. There are currently 500 banned, compared to 1,370 in the EU. We hope to bring Canada up to the same standard, as well as enforce the accountability standards that are set in place, but so rarely followed.
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle - in that order!
Sustainability is at the forefront of all that we do. Keeping this in mind, we are firm believers in taking steps to reduce your consumption before following up with reusing and recycling materials. By adopting a Capsule approach to your beauty routine, you can lessen the amount of materials required and limit the possibility of materials ending up in the landfill.
Our packaging reflects this belief. Through the use of compostable bamboo and seed paper, and through our refill systems, Elate has created a wide variety of zero- and low-waste options. We also recognize that the path to zero-waste is not a short one. We are currently developing more systems that will allow you to repurpose your packaging, such as the recent switch to aluminum jars for our foundation, concealer, and free samples. Next on our radar: creating an eco-friendly solution for our loose powder refills!
